Health care scholarships available
Kaiser Permanente’s Health Equity Scholarship Program aims to develop healthier communities by helping young leaders achieve their dreams of going to college and pursuing a career in the health care field. Graduating Hawaii high school seniors can apply for a $5,000 scholarship starting today through May 15. Scholarship recipients will be announced Aug. 23.
Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll in an accredited, public or not-for-profit, four-year university or community college for the 2021-22 academic school year. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 weighted scale and demonstrate an interest in pursuing a clinical (physician, pharmacist, practitioner, nurse) or non-clinical (accounting, business administration, finance, human resources, marketing, operations, public policy) career in the health care industry. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need and/or are from underrepresented communities.

Crime Victims’ Rights Week starts Monday
This year marks the 40th anniversary of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, a nationwide event to remember crime victims and survivors, and to honor those in our community committed to serving victims.
The theme of this year’s event is “Support Victims. Build Trust. Engage Communities.”
At 10 a.m. Monday, the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney will be kicking off the event by dedicating the new Kona Peace Garden located outside of the Prosecutor’s office, within the West Hawaii Civic Center. As part of the Peace Garden dedication, the public will have an opportunity to paint a rock in honor of loved ones who have lost their lives due to crime. These rocks will be displayed within the Peace Garden. The office will also be displaying the “Clothesline Project,” a visual display of T-shirts designed and decorated by victims of crimes committed on the Big Island.
At 11 a.m. April 23, the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney will host an event at the Hilo Peace Garden, located outside of the Prosecutor’s Office within the Aupuni Center. Informational booths and exhibits will be on display and the public will also have the opportunity to participate in decorating a memorial rock for the Hilo Peace Garden.
Attendeees must wear a mask, maintain a distance of 6 feet from other participants, and comply with all other COVID-19-related guidelines.
